The Northeast women assault Delhi case triggered outrage after two women alleged racist abuse and molestation outside a club in Nehru Place.

2 women from Northeast India allege they were beaten, racially abused and molested outside a club in Delhi’s Nehru Place area early Saturday morning, triggering outrage online and renewed scrutiny of women’s safety in the capital. Delhi police said the incident took place near a tea stall outside a hotel in southeast Delhi.  The women told investigators a group of men began catcalling them before the confrontation turned violent. One complaint alleged her clothes were torn during the assault. Another said she was chased and hit with a bamboo stick while trying to leave the area.

Police identified four accused: Md Fahad, Md Savej, Mohd Faheem and Md Arif,  after reviewing CCTV footage and questioning witnesses. At least two suspects were later detained, according to multiple reports.

Violence in Public, Crowd Watching

The women were taken to AIIMS for medical examination after a PCR call reached Kalkaji police station around 7 am on May 10. Investigators registered a case under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including assault, molestation, stalking, wrongful restraint and criminal intimidation.

What drew particular anger online was the victims’ allegation that bystanders watched the incident unfold instead of intervening. One woman reportedly told police that people nearby recorded videos while the assault was happening.

The incident occurred in one of Delhi’s busiest commercial zones. That detail has fueled criticism over policing and public safety around nightlife areas.

Racist Abuse Alleged

The women also alleged they were targeted with racist remarks because they were from the Northeast. Delhi Police’s Special Police Unit for North Eastern Region (SPUNER) was informed during the investigation.

Cases involving racial abuse against Northeast residents have repeatedly surfaced in Delhi, Bengaluru and other metro cities over the past decade. Activists say Northeast women are frequently stereotyped and subjected to harassment, stalking and verbal abuse in public spaces.

In 2014, the death of Arunachal Pradesh student Nido Taniam after an assault in Delhi triggered nationwide protests against racism targeting Northeast Indians.

Investigation Underway

Police teams have conducted raids linked to the suspects, officials said. CCTV footage from nearby roads and businesses is being examined. No final arrests had been officially confirmed at the time this report was filed.

Online reactions continued to intensify Monday night, with many users focusing not only on the alleged assault itself, but on the casual cruelty described in the victims’ account, a group of men allegedly attacking two women in public while others stood nearby and watched.
