“The Trump-Netanyahu rift deepened on Monday after reports revealed a heated phone call between Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over Israel’s military operations in Lebanon.”
President Donald Trump privately erupted at Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a tense phone call on Monday after Israeli operations in Lebanon threatened a broader U.S. diplomatic push with Iran, according to multiple reports citing the American officials who were familiar with the exchange.
The confrontation came after Israeli strikes in and around Beirut complicated ceasefire negotiations involving Hezbollah and Tehran. One U.S. official said Trump accused Netanyahu of acting “crazy” and warned him that “Everybody hates Israel because of this”. The White House has not released a transcript of the call.

Lebanon Strikes Collide with U.S. Diplomacy
Trump had spent recent weeks pushing a framework aimed at reducing regional escalation while reopening indirect negotiations with Iran. The effort reportedly included discussions around sanctions relief, Gulf shipping security, and extending ceasefire arrangements tied to Hezbollah activity in southern Lebanon. That diplomacy hit a wall after Israeli operations intensified near Beirut.
Iran suspended talks with Washington shortly afterward, according to Iranian state-linked media and U.S. reporting. Tehran insisted any agreement with the United States must include guarantees tied to Lebanon and Israeli military operations there. Netanyahu publicly refused to soften Israel’s position.
“If Hezbollah does not stop firing at our cities and citizens, Israel will strike terrorist targets in Beirut”, Netanyahu wrote in a statement posted on X roughly two and a half hours after Trump described the call as “very productive.” The Israeli prime minister added that IDF operations in southern Lebanon would continue “as planned”.

Trump Claimed Troops Were Turned Back
Trump posted twice on Truth Social following the call, saying no Israeli troops would enter Beirut and claiming Hezbollah representatives had agreed that “all shooting will stop”. “I had a conversation with Bibi Netanyahu today, asking him not to go into a major raid of Beirut”, Trump wrote. “He turned his troops around”.
No independent confirmation has emerged showing Hezbollah formally agreed to a ceasefire. Cross-border exchanges continued Monday night, according to regional security reports. CNN political analyst David Axelrod later said Trump appeared “really mad” about being pulled deeper into another Middle East crisis. Axelrod argued the regional instability could damage Trump politically as oil prices climb and inflation pressures return.
AAA data released on Sunday showed the U.S. national average for gasoline rose to $4.32 per gallon, the highest level since 2022. The administration now faces a narrowing path: restrain Israel, revive talks with Iran, and avoid a wider regional war stretching from Lebanon to the Strait of Hormuz.
