Hardik Pandya is back at the centre of the IPL transfer market, but Mumbai Indians have still not officially put him up for trade.
A report published on August 10 said five franchises are exploring possible deals for the India all-rounder, with Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders, Lucknow Super Giants and Chennai Super Kings linked to different combinations. The possibilities include Yashasvi Jaiswal, Axar Patel, Cameron Green and Nicholas Pooran, although none has been confirmed by a franchise.
Pandya’s future became a major storyline after Mumbai Indians ended IPL 2026 in ninth place with eight points from 14 matches. It was the second time in three seasons under Pandya that MI missed the playoffs. The captain also had a modest individual campaign, scoring 206 runs and taking four wickets.
Why the Hardik Pandya trade talk has grown
The immediate trigger is Mumbai’s poor season, but the story extends beyond one league campaign. Pandya returned to Mumbai in a blockbuster trade from Gujarat Titans before IPL 2024 after captaining GT for two seasons. Gujarat reached the final in both 2022 and 2023, winning the title in their debut season.
The IPL’s official record shows that Pandya moved from GT to MI in November 2023, while Cameron Green moved from Mumbai to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in a separate deal. Pandya’s return also came with the MI captaincy, replacing Rohit Sharma.
That transition has been difficult. Mumbai missed the playoffs in 2024, recovered enough to make the playoffs in 2025, and then slipped to ninth in 2026. Pandya’s 2026 numbers also fell well below his international output earlier in the year. He scored 217 runs at a strike rate of 160.74 in the 2026 T20 World Cup and took nine wickets, according to available career records.

There was also an injury issue. Pandya missed matches for Mumbai during the IPL with fitness issues and was later ruled out of India’s ODI series against Afghanistan after suffering a quadriceps injury. He was subsequently ruled out of the England ODIs because he had not completed the required bowling workload. He has been training at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru during his recovery.
Mumbai’s own position has been more cautious than the trade reports suggest. After the IPL season, an MI spokesperson told RevSportz: “Currently, we are not engaged in conversations with regard to player trades. The same is only possible once the review is complete.”
That statement does not confirm Pandya is staying; it says only that no trade discussions were officially underway at that point.
Five teams, five possible routes
Rajasthan Royals are reportedly one of the most discussed destinations. The proposed deal involves Pandya and Yashasvi Jaiswal, giving Mumbai an Indian top-order batter while RR would add a proven all-rounder and finisher. The proposal remains a report, not a completed transaction.
Delhi Capitals have been linked with an Axar Patel-for-Pandya scenario. That would be a major reshaping of both teams because Axar offers left-arm spin, batting depth and Indian-player value, while Pandya provides pace bowling, finishing and leadership.
Kolkata Knight Riders have also appeared repeatedly in the speculation. One reported obstacle is the difficulty of offering Mumbai a marquee player without weakening KKR’s own core. Cameron Green has been mentioned as one possible name, although his international schedule could complicate his availability.

Lucknow Super Giants present another leadership angle. With Nicholas Pooran reportedly being considered in a potential swap, the move would give LSG an experienced Indian all-rounder and captaincy option. Chennai Super Kings have also been linked with Pandya, but their management has publicly pushed back on that claim.
CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan told Hindustan Times Digital: “We have not had any discussion. This will be done only after the season review, which will happen only after the MLC.”
The conflicting reports show the gap between speculation and confirmed negotiations. MI has denied active trade talks, while CSK has denied discussions. Latest reports say approaches are being made, but no franchise has announced a completed agreement.
What happens next for Hardik Pandya
Pandya’s value is unusual. He is not simply a middle-order batter. He can provide four overs when fit, finish an innings, and captain an IPL side. His record also shows why teams remain interested despite the 2026 downturn. He led Gujarat Titans to the IPL title in 2022 and a runners-up finish in 2023, then won the T20 World Cup with India in 2026.
His fitness, however, is central to any decision. The 32-year-old has not played internationally since the 2026 IPL, and his ODI comeback has been delayed. Any franchise considering a major trade would have to weigh his all-round value against his recent availability.
There is a precedent. Pandya has already been involved in one of the IPL’s biggest recent trades, moving from Gujarat Titans to Mumbai Indians in 2023. That transfer was an all-cash deal, with his reported league salary at ₹15 crore. A second major move would not be unprecedented.
For now, the conclusion is narrower than the rumours. Hardik Pandya has not been confirmed as an outgoing Mumbai Indians player. Five franchises have been linked to possible deals, multiple player combinations have been reported, and MI is conducting its post-season review. Until the franchises formally announce a trade, every proposed swap remains just that: a proposal.
