Lionel Messi has finally walked away from Argentina and this time, there is little ambiguity. At 39, after six World Cups, four major senior international trophies and a record 207 appearances for the national team, Messi announced on August 31 that he is retiring from international football. His final appearance came in the World Cup final on July 19, when Spain beat Argentina 1-0 after extra time in New York/New Jersey Stadium. Ferran Torres scored the winner in the 106th minute.
The announcement came weeks after the defeat, but Messi’s decision was not made overnight. In a handwritten message published on Instagram, he said he had already written the words on July 21, two days after the final. “It was a decision that hurt and still hurts deep in my soul,” Messi wrote. He also made the line that may define the retirement: “I emptied myself, I have nothing more to give.”

Messi leaves after winning the trophies that once escaped him
The timing matters because Messi is not leaving Argentina as the player who quit in frustration in 2016. He is leaving after completing the job.
Messi lost the 2014 World Cup final to Germany and Copa América finals in 2015 and 2016. After the 2016 defeat to Chile, he announced his first international retirement. He returned just 66 days later, scoring Argentina’s only goal in a 1-0 World Cup qualifier against Uruguay.
The comeback changed the story. Argentina won the Copa América in 2021, the Finalissima in 2022, the World Cup in Qatar in 2022 and another Copa América in 2024. The Argentine Football Association now records Messi with 207 appearances, 125 goals and 68 assists for the national side. He is Argentina’s most-capped player and its leading scorer.
That makes the 2026 retirement fundamentally different from the first one. Messi is not walking away without silverware. He leaves as a world champion and a two-time Copa América winner, having turned the most painful period of his international career into its strongest chapter.

The final World Cup made the decision harder, not easier!
Messi’s last tournament also complicates any claim that age simply forced him out. He scored eight goals at the 2026 World Cup and finished with the Silver Boot. Across six World Cups, he reached 34 appearances, extending the all-time tournament record.
Argentina reached the final after beating England 2-1 in the semifinal, but Spain ended the title defence in extra time. Messi’s final World Cup appearance came in the same New York/New Jersey stadium where his first retirement had effectively begun a decade earlier. FIFA has described the parallel as the closing of a circle.
Messi had already been thinking about the end before the final loss. His message says the words were written two days afterward. His father Jorge Messi died on August 8 in Rosario, and Messi said the loss left him “more convinced than before” about the decision. The timeline points to a decision that was already forming.
Messi’s Argentina shirt now belongs to someone else
Messi’s own explanation points toward succession. “There are great young players coming through who deserve to be here,” he wrote. The next Argentina team must replace more than 125 goals alone.
It loses a captain, its record scorer, its most-capped player and the central figure of the generation that ended a 28-year major-trophy drought. Yet Messi is not leaving football. Inter Miami has extended his contract through the 2028 MLS season, meaning his club career continues in the United States.
There is a final footnote to the Messi-Cristiano Ronaldo era. When Messi retired the first time in 2016, Ronaldo publicly defended him, saying, “Messi has taken a tough decision and people should understand.” Ronaldo hoped Messi would return. He did and eventually won the World Cup.
