A major restructuring has taken place in the Malayalam film industry with a reconstitution of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA)

The AMMA crisis unfolded Mohanlal resignation after a series of allegations of molestation against some AMMA members, including popular actors Siddique and Baburaj. These allegations as well as the growing resentment over what has been seen by many as inaction on the findings of Justice Hema’s committee report against some office bearers, brought sharp criticism and demand for accountability.

AMMA president Mohanlal eventually quit as the pressure mounted, amidst the AMMA crisis that led to his resignation. The leadership of the executive committee was also dissolved simultaneously. It’s also in the wake of a stream of resignations that included Siddique. Who adamantly denied any connection to the “casting couch” phenomenon within Mollywood.

The committee in the name of Justice Hema has brought to fore a systemic sexual abuse. Prevalent against women actors, dominance by few powerful group within industry, and exploitation for junior artists. The report revealed this week sheds light on how vital the reforms were. And where women in Hollywood needed more backing.

This is a watershed moment in judgment and probably an unforeseen one at that, for AMMA. In light of these revelations and given that the current executive committee has now dissolved. Next month’s elections are an opportunity for AIM to answer some of those concerns whilst attempting to ensure it can regain trust across the industry.
