Cabinet Approves Unified Scheme ‘Vigyan Dhara’ for Science and Technology

The Union Cabinet recently approved a significant move to streamline and improve science and technology initiatives in India. The government has merged three existing central sector schemes into a single, unified scheme named ‘Vigyan Dhara’. This strategic decision is aimed at improving efficiency, coordination, and the overall impact of science and technology programs in the country.

The scheme aims to promote research, innovation, and human capacity building in science and technology. The government has allocated Rs. 10,579.84 crore for the scheme during the 15th Finance Commission period (2021-26).

Objectives of ‘Vigyan Dhara’

The ‘Vigyan Dhara’ scheme has three primary objectives:

  • The scheme will focus on strengthening research institutions and encouraging the development of skilled human resources in the field of science and technology.
  • It will promote research activities, particularly in areas such as basic research, sustainable energy, and water.
  • The scheme will support innovation and the development of new technologies to drive economic growth and address societal challenges.
