Elon Musk has once again found himself at the center of controversy after posting on X that “feminism and lack of children has killed happiness“, a remark that quickly drew criticism from women’s rights advocates, researchers and social media users. The billionaire has repeatedly argued that declining birth rates pose one of the greatest threats to civilization, often urging people to have more children and warning about ageing populations. His latest comments came shortly after he amplified claims that India’s fertility rate had fallen below the replacement level of 2.1 children per woman, adding that birth rates among the country’s most educated population had dropped below replacement years ago. While Musk framed the issue as a consequence of modern cultural shifts, critics argued that blaming feminism ignored decades of demographic research linking declining fertility to rising housing costs, delayed marriage, childcare expenses, economic uncertainty and greater educational opportunities for women.

Musk’s comments also revived scrutiny of years of allegations and workplace controversies involving women. In 2022, Business Insider reported that a former SpaceX flight attendant alleged Musk exposed himself during a massage aboard the company’s private jet in 2016, touched her leg without consent and offered to buy her a horse in exchange for sexual favors. According to the report, SpaceX later reached a reported $250,000 severance agreement with the woman. In June 2024, The Wall Street Journal published an investigation based on interviews, internal documents and text messages that described allegations from current and former employees about Musk’s relationships with female staff, claims that he repeatedly asked at least one employee to have his children, and concerns from some executives that personal relationships involving the company’s chief executive created conflicts of interest and discouraged employees from reporting workplace concerns. Separately, several former SpaceX employees filed lawsuits alleging they were fired after criticizing Musk and raising concerns about workplace culture, discrimination and harassment within the company. Those claims remain subject to ongoing legal proceedings, and the companies involved have disputed the allegations.

Musk has consistently denied the central allegations made against him. Responding to the flight attendant claim, he said the accusation was false and insisted there was “a lot more to this story“. His attorney has also rejected allegations contained in reporting about his personal conduct and said Musk undergoes regular drug testing and has never failed a test. SpaceX has defended its handling of workplace complaints, saying it investigates allegations seriously and disputes claims made in employment-related lawsuits. None of the allegations described in the investigations has resulted in a criminal conviction against Musk, and several remain contested.

For many feminist scholars, however, the controversy extends beyond one social media post or one investigation. They argue that feminism is fundamentally about expanding women’s choices rather than discouraging motherhood, and that reducing complex demographic trends to a single movement overlooks decades of research. Studies from demographers, economists and international organizations have consistently found that falling birth rates are shaped by multiple factors, including affordability, employment opportunities, access to childcare, healthcare and shifting family structures. Countries with some of the world’s strongest gender equality policies continue to face demographic challenges, while others have stabilized fertility through family-friendly public policies rather than by challenging women’s rights.

The latest debate reflects a wider cultural divide over gender, power and accountability. Supporters of Musk argue that his comments are part of a broader discussion about population decline and should be judged separately from allegations about his personal conduct.

For many critics, Musk’s attempts to blame feminism for declining happiness ignore a more uncomfortable question: Whether a billionaire who has repeatedly faced sexual harassment allegations and workplace misconduct claims involving women should be positioning himself as an authority on women’s rights at all.
