“International Yoga Day 2026 drew thousands of participants across India on June 21, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi leading the main celebration in Visakhapatnam.“
India’s 12th International Day of Yoga unfolded across the country on Sunday, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi leading the flagship celebration in Kolkata while President Droupadi Murmu headed events in Madhya Pradesh, marking one of the largest coordinated public wellness campaigns of the year.
The main event took place at Kolkata’s Red Road, where an estimated 30,000 participants gathered for mass yoga sessions under the 2026 theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing“. The theme reflects a growing focus on preventive healthcare as India prepares for a rapidly ageing population in the coming decades.
Addressing participants, Modi described yoga as a force that transcends age and geography. “Yoga brings people together“, the Prime Minister said. “Yoga is not just physical exercise“.

Nationwide Participation Across States
The celebrations extended far beyond Kolkata. President Murmu performed yoga at Jabalpur’s Garrison Ground in Madhya Pradesh alongside Governor Mangubhai Patel and Chief Minister Mohan Yadav. Officials reported mass participation across the state, with major events also held in Bhopal and Indore.
In Ahmedabad, Union Home Minister Amit Shah joined Yoga Day activities and described the practice as a tool for holistic wellness. “Yoga nourishes holistic well-being, energises mind, body and soul“, Shah said during the event.

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel attended state-level celebrations in Gandhinagar district, while participants in Vadodara staged aqua yoga demonstrations in water-based sessions.
Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar participated in celebrations at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University in Coimbatore. Union Minister of State L. Murugan joined events in Coimbatore, while Defence Minister of State Sanjay Seth took part in programs in Rameswaram.

Military, Parliament and Diplomatic Missions Join In
The armed forces also mobilized on a significant scale. According to PTI reporting cited in The First Report.news’s live coverage, around 3,500 people gathered at Cariappa Parade Ground in Delhi Cantonment, including Army personnel, families, NCC cadets and schoolchildren.
Military commands across northern, western, eastern, southern and central regions conducted yoga sessions throughout the day. Senior Army officials said events began around 6 a.m. in several locations.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh addressed a gathering at the Indian Air Force’s Advanced Landing Ground in Upper Shillong, Meghalaya. “Yoga is not merely the foundation of a healthy body, but a path to living a balanced and disciplined life“, Singh said.

At Parliament House in New Delhi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh and BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad participated in yoga sessions within the parliamentary complex.
International participation also remained a key feature. Around 400 people, including diplomats, academics and members of the Indian diaspora, joined celebrations organized by the Consulate General of India in Shanghai. Consul General Pratik Mathur described yoga as India’s gift to the world and linked the practice to healthy ageing and mental well-being.

More Than a Wellness Event
International Yoga Day was first proposed by Modi at the United Nations in 2014. The UN General Assembly adopted the proposal later that year, and the first global observance was held in June 2015.
Over the past decade, Yoga Day has evolved into one of India’s most visible international outreach efforts, combining public-health messaging with cultural diplomacy. Supporters point to expanding global participation and growing scientific research into yoga’s health benefits.

Critics, however, argue that the annual event increasingly overlaps with political messaging and government branding.
What remains clear is the scale. From Kolkata and Jabalpur to Shillong, Srinagar and Shanghai, Yoga Day 2026 drew thousands of participants into synchronized celebrations centered on a single message: healthy ageing through yoga.
