There have been news reports about some cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) found in Karnataka. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has discovered two cases of HMPV in the state. These cases were found during regular checks for various respiratory viruses, which are part of ICMR’s continuous work to track respiratory illnesses nationwide.
It is important to note that HMPV (Human Metapneumovirus) is already present worldwide, including in India. Cases of respiratory illnesses linked to HMPV have been reported in several countries. Additionally, according to the latest information from ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research) and the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), there has been no significant increase in cases of Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) or Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) in India.
The details of the HMPV cases that have been identified in Karnataka:
- A 3-month-old baby girl was diagnosed with HMPV after being admitted to Baptist Hospital in Bengaluru. She had bronchopneumonia but has since been discharged and is doing well.
- An 8-month-old baby boy tested positive for HMPV on January 3, 2025, after being admitted to Baptist Hospital in Bengaluru. He also had bronchopneumonia and is currently recovering.
It’s important to know that neither of the patients affected has ever traveled abroad.
The Union Health Ministry is keeping a close watch on the situation using all available monitoring systems. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) will keep tracking how HMPV (a type of virus) is spreading throughout the year. The World Health Organization (WHO) is also giving regular updates about the situation in China to help guide further actions.
A recent practice drill held across the country has shown that India is ready to deal with any possible rise in respiratory illnesses. If needed, public health measures can be put into action quickly.
