Actor-turned-politician Vijay is poised to form the next government in Tamil Nadu after his party, Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), emerged as the single largest force with 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly, according to the live election updates.

The majority mark stands at 118. Congress, which won 5 seats, has now agreed to support TVK. Smaller parties including CPI, CPM and VCK are also expected to back Vijay, potentially pushing the alliance past the halfway mark before government formation discussions on May 7.

Yes, the Political Affairs Committee has authorised the TNCC to support TVK in government formation”, Congress MP Sasikanth Senthil.

DMK Suffers Major Collapse

The result marks one of the sharpest electoral setbacks for M. K. Stalin and the DMK in recent years. The election updates reported DMK at 59 seats, while AIADMK secured 47. Stalin also reportedly lost Kolathur, his long-held constituency. BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan called the outcome an “anti-wave against MK Stalin” and linked the result to voter anger over governance and law-and-order concerns.

Vijay has made his mark in one shot,” she said. “He will receive support, and he should run a good government.”

Congress leaders Girish Chodankar and Praveen Chakraborty were reportedly in touch with TVK negotiators through the night. Rahul Gandhi backed support for Vijay, while Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge insisted the Tamil Nadu Congress unit formally approve the move.

Coalition Lines Begin To Shift

The support arrangement comes with conditions. Congress leaders reportedly told TVK to avoid alignment with the NDA or any BJP backed bloc. Vijay’s party has already refused BJP support publicly on ideological grounds.

DMK reacted sharply. Party spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai described Congress as “backstabbers” during an interview with NDTV and said the alliance decision had damaged long-standing opposition coordination in the state.

The election could become the biggest political restructuring in Tamil Nadu since the decline of the Jayalalithaa and Karunanidhi era. Final confirmation from the Election Commission and coalition negotiations is still awaited.
