In response to recent accusations of leaked exam papers, the government passed a tough new Anti-Paper Leak Law on Friday. This law aims to crack down on cheating and other problems in competitive exams. It took effect that night and carries harsh penalties for those breaking it. Offenders could face up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to 1 crore rupees.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (2) of section 1 of the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024 (1 of 2024). The central government now appoints the 21st day of June 2024, as the date on which the provisions of the said Act shall come into force,” said a notification issued by the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pensions on Friday.
Key Points of the New Anti Paper Leak Law
Strict Penalties
The Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, of 2024 prescribes a jail term of 3-5 years. A fine of up to Rs 10 lakh for individuals involved in unfair practices like impersonation, paper solving, and failing to report exam fraud.
Targeting Organized Crime
The law takes a tough stance on organized cheating, with those involved facing imprisonment of 5-10 years and a minimum fine of Rs 1 crore.
Protecting Students
Bona fide students are not liable for any action under the law.
Accountability for Service Providers
Service providers and institutions found guilty of rigging exams will be responsible for bearing the cost of re-conducting the examinations.
