New Delhi: The strike by resident doctors protesting the gruesome rape and murder of a colleague trainee doctor in Kolkata has come to an end.
The Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association (FORDA) called off the strike after meeting with Union Health Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya.
The strike, which began on August 12, disrupted outpatient services and operations across the country. The doctors demanded increased security, better working conditions, and swift justice for the victim.
The Health Minister assured the doctors of a safe working environment and promised to form a committee to address their concerns. The government also agreed to take steps to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The Case
The brutal rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata shocked the nation. A civic volunteer was arrested in connection with the crime. Public outrage and pressure from multiple groups led to the transfer of the case to the CBI. The Central Bureau of Investigation will now take over the investigation into the tragic murder of the doctor.
The post-mortem report revealed that someone throttled her to death. Strangling broke her thyroid cartilage, and injuries appeared on her belly, lips, fingers, and left leg. The report also noted that she bled from both eyes, her mouth, and her private parts. It described the wounds in her private areas as resulting from “perverted sexuality” and “genital torture.”
The incident has sparked a nationwide debate on the safety of healthcare workers and the need for stricter laws to protect them.
