Mumbai, India – A recent incident at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has ignited a debate about food restrictions and inclusivity on campus. The Ambedkar Periyar Phule Study Circle (APPSC), a left-leaning student organization, has alleged that the ‘Amul Canteen’ on the IIT Bombay campus banned non-vegetarian food within its dining area.

According to the APPSC, the canteen has a strict rule against bringing any non-vegetarian items into the dining space, even if they are not being consumed there. This policy has sparked anger among students who believe it is discriminatory and exclusionary.

The APPSC has posted a picture of a notice that clearly states, “Amul Canteen is a pure-vegetarian eatery. The canteen strictly prohibits bringing non-vegetarian food into the dining area”.

The move has drawn parallels to last year’s incident. When some students protested against the alleged segregation of tables for vegetarian and non-vegetarian eaters at the institute. The APPSC imposed a fine of ₹10,000 on those who participated in the protest.

IIT Bombay has not yet issued a statement in response to the Non-Vegetarian Food Banned latest allegations. The incident has raised concerns about the institute’s inclusivity. Institute’s ability to cater to the diverse dietary needs of its students. This has initiated important questions about the institute’s commitment to these values.
