TikTok on Thursday said it was putting restrictions on state-backed media to counter acts of foreign influence on the platform during an important election year in multiple countries.
- To address concerns about foreign influence, TikTok is limiting the reach of state-backed media.
- These media outlets will no longer appear in user feeds for “current global events and affairs” outside their home country.
- They cannot advertise to users outside their primary country.
- This move follows TikTok’s reported takedown of 15 foreign influence operations and over 3,000 accounts.
Monetization Boost for Creators
- In a bid to attract and retain creators, TikTok is lowering the follower threshold for its monetization program.
- Creators with over 1,000 followers can now earn money through the platform, down from the previous 5,000 follower requirement.
- They can also utilize new affiliate marketing tools to generate income.
