An IITian (Madras student) faces charges of attempted murder after allegedly stabbing a family of three in Kolkata. The incident, rooted in a neighborhood dispute over stray dogs, has provoked anger.

What Happened?

  • Archan Bhattacharya, a first-year student at IIT Madras, travelled from Chennai to Kolkata.
  • Bhattacharya allegedly stabbed Gobindo Adhikari, his wife, and their son in their home.
  • The victims are currently receiving treatment at MR Bangur Hospital.
  • The motive for the attack is believed to be revenge for the Adhikari family’s alleged killing of a stray dog.

A Longstanding Dispute

  • Investigators revealed a history of tension between the Bhattacharya family (friends with the Debnath family) and the Adhikari family.
  • The Adhikaris reportedly complained about stray dogs, fed by the Debnath family, entering their house.
  • This disagreement culminated in the alleged beating of a stray dog by the Adhikari family, leading to the animal’s death.

IIT Madras has not yet issued an official statement on the incident. However, the institute is likely to take disciplinary action against Bhattacharya, pending investigation.
