Getting a good placement offer after studying at an IIT isn’t as easy as it used to be. This year, many IIT students struggle to find jobs, especially those in Master’s and PhD programs. Some students are waiting for better offers because of the name of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT).
- At IIT Bombay, 33% of the 1,973 participating students were still seeking jobs as of April 4. While at IIT Delhi, around 40% of students were yet to be placed.
- Approximately 30% of students across older IITs are still awaiting placements this season, with a decrease of 15-25% in job offers compared to the previous year.
- Smaller companies offer salaries ranging from Rs 5-6 lakhs. However many students aren’t interested because they expect more after studying at an IIT.
- The Financial Daily has been reporting the effects of the tech industry slowdown. The broader decline in hiring on placements across various institutions, including the IITs.
- The increase in batch sizes at institutes like IIT Delhi has further complicated the placement scenario.
- To help students in placements, IITs are even organizing special placement drives for those in Ph.D. programs. This shows they’re trying to find solutions for this new job market situation.
