Maharashtra Increases Allowances 58,700 for Tribal Hostel Students

The Maharashtra government recently increased allowances for tribal student. This is a significant step to support their education. Over 58,700 tribal students living in 490 hostels will benefit. These hostels are managed by the Tribal Development Department. The hike ranges from 40% to 100%. This addresses rising living costs and inflation.

The state cabinet approved the allowance revision on June 24, 2025. It includes increases in subsistence, educational material, and food allowances.

Maharashtra Tribal Student Allowances Revisions

  • Monthly Subsistence Allowance:
    • Tehsil-level: From ₹500 to ₹1,000
    • District-level: From ₹600 to ₹1,300
    • Divisional-level: From ₹800 to ₹1,400
    • Girls receive an additional ₹150 (up from ₹100).
  • Annual Educational Material Purchase Allowance:
    • Classes 8-10: From ₹3,200 to ₹4,500
    • Junior College & Diploma: From ₹4,000 to ₹5,000
    • Undergraduate Degree: From ₹4,500 to ₹5,700
    • Medical & Engineering: From ₹6,000 to ₹8,000
  • Monthly Food Allowance:
    • Municipal Corporations & Divisional Cities: From ₹3,500 to ₹5,000
    • District-level: From ₹3,000 to ₹4,500

This policy change places an extra ₹83.66 crore burden on the state. The annual expenditure will rise to ₹228.41 crore from ₹144.74 crore. This investment aims to reduce dropout rates and encourage higher education. It also promotes professional aspirations among tribal youth. The move aligns with the National Education Policy 2020‘s focus on equitable access to education.
