Karnataka Declares State Mourning, Schools Closed to Honor Former CM SM Krishna

Karnataka has declared a three-day state mourning period from December 10th to 12th, 2024, to honor the passing of former Chief Minister S.M. Krishna at the age of 92. As a mark of respect, all government offices, schools, and colleges, including aided institutions, will remain closed on Wednesday, December 11th.  

  • Public Holiday: Wednesday, December 11th, 2024, has been declared a public holiday across the state.  
  • A three-day mourning period is in effect from December 10th to 12th.  
  • The national flag will fly at half-mast on all state government buildings.  
  • All public entertainment programs are prohibited during the mourning period.  
  • State Honors: S.M. Krishna, instrumental in Bengaluru’s transformation into India’s Silicon Valley, will receive full state honors at his cremation in Mandya.  

S.M. Krishna, a prominent figure in Indian politics, served as the Chief Minister of Karnataka, Governor of Maharashtra, and Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award, in 2023.  

The state government has urged citizens to observe the mourning period with dignity and respect for the departed leader.
