The English cricketing community is in shock following the sudden death of 20-year-old spinner Josh Baker. Baker, who played for Worcestershire County Cricket Club, passed away on Thursday.

Promising Young Talent

  • He played 47 matches across formats for Worcestershire, taking 70 wickets.
  • Represented England at the under-19 level.
  • Instrumental in Worcestershire’s promotion from Division Two.
  • He scored two half-centuries, with a career-best 75 against Gloucestershire.

Worcestershire paid tribute to Baker on their website, highlighting his warm personality and positive influence on the team. “Josh was much more than a teammate; he was an integral part of our cricket family,” said former England spinner Ashley Giles, CEO of Worcestershire.

Emerging Talent Backed by Legends

Baker’s talent was evident early on, and he had the backing of established cricketers. Notably, in a 2022 match against Durham, a young Baker conceded 34 runs in an over to England all-rounder Ben Stokes. However, Stokes messaged Baker on WhatsApp later, encouraging him to move on from the bad outing.

Worcestershire to Honor Josh Baker Memory

The Worcestershire club plans to honor Baker’s memory but will respect the family’s privacy during this difficult time. “The Club, along with Josh’s family, requests the respect of privacy as we mourn this immense loss,” the club stated.

Josh Baker’s death is a significant loss to English cricket. He was a rising star with a bright future ahead of him.
