A revolutionary change is on the horizon for the Indian footwear industry. A new shoe sizing system, “Bha” (भ), is being proposed to replace the currently used UK/European and US sizing standards. This development comes after a comprehensive nationwide survey conducted by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)–Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI).

Why a New Bha System?

The survey, encompassing over 1 lakh individuals across India, revealed insights:

  • Indian feet have a wider build compared to Western feet.
  • Current sizing often leads to ill-fitting footwear, causing discomfort and potential health issues.
  • Indian foot size patterns differ, with women’s feet reaching peak size around 11 years old and men’s around 15-16.

Benefits of Bha

The Bha system proposes eight sizes catering to various age groups. Initially, their focus lay on sizes for adults (III-VIII). This streamlined system offers numerous advantages:

  • Better fit and improved comfort for Indian consumers.
  • Reduced wastage and more efficient manufacturing for footwear companies.
  • Support for the domestic footwear industry and its growth.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is currently reviewing the Bha proposal for approval. If implemented, Bha has the potential to revolutionize the Indian footwear industry, prioritizing comfort, foot health, and a perfect fit for all.
