“The Marco Rubio India visit began Saturday in Kolkata as the U.S. Secretary of State opened a four-day diplomatic trip focused on Quad coordination, trade tensions and energy cooperation.“
Marco Rubio India Visit Starts With Kolkata Outreach
Marco Rubio landed in Kolkata on Saturday morning, opening a closely watched 4 day India visit with a stop at Mother House, the headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity founded by Mother Teresa. Rubio spent about an hour inside the compound before traveling to Nirmala Shishu Bhavan, an orphanage run by the order. Security was tightened across central Kolkata, including near Victoria Memorial, where Rubio later visited with members of the U.S. delegation.
The visit is Rubio’s first official India trip as Secretary of State and the first Kolkata stop by a serving U.S. Secretary of State in 14 years.

Trade tensions and China shadow talks
Behind the carefully staged humanitarian optics sits a tougher diplomatic mission. The trip comes as Washington attempts to stabilize ties with New Delhi after months of friction over tariffs, trade access and regional strategy. Rubio is also expected to participate in Quad meetings later this week alongside Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.
The Quad, made up of India, U.S., Japan and Australia, has increasingly shifted focus toward maritime security and China’s Indo-Pacific expansion. “India great partner, ready to expand energy cooperation”, Rubio said in related remarks carried by Indian media during the visit. Officials are expected to discuss energy exports, semiconductor supply chains and defense coordination in meetings scheduled in New Delhi later this week.

Symbolism first, agreements later
Rubio’s Kolkata stop appears designed to soften the opening tone of the trip. Photographs released from Mother House showed Rubio interacting with nuns from the Missionaries of Charity alongside U.S. Ambassador Sergio Gor. The humanitarian visit dominated Indian television coverage through Saturday afternoon. No major agreements were announced on day one. Indian officials have so far avoided publicly committing to new trade concessions, while U.S. officials continue pushing for deeper strategic alignment against China. Bilateral trade between the two countries recently crossed nearly $190 billion, according to U.S. trade data.
Rubio is expected to continue to Jaipur and New Delhi before Quad talks begin on May 26.
