An 83 year old American tourist from Washington DC was found dead in Srinagar on Wednesday morning after reportedly collapsing in the city’s Dalgate area, officials said. The deceased was identified as Anderson John David, according to local authorities. He was shifted to a nearby hospital after falling unconscious but was declared brought dead on arrival.

Body Shifted to SMHS Hospital

Officials said the body was later moved to SMHS Hospital Srinagar for medico-legal formalities, including full body CT scan. Police have not released the exact cause of death. “The deceased has been identified as Anderson John David, a resident of Washington DC, USA”, officials told local media. Authorities also confirmed that “cognizance has been taken and further proceedings have been initiated.” Dalgate, located near Srinagar’s Dal Lake, is one of the Valley’s busiest tourist zones and regularly sees foreign visitors during the summer season.

Cause of Death Still Unknown

No injuries or signs of foul play were mentioned in the initial reports, though police have not publicly ruled anything out. Officials have also not disclosed whether the tourist had any pre-existing medical condition or whether he was travelling alone.

Deaths involving foreign nationals in India typically trigger mandatory police documentation and medical examination procedures, even in cases suspected to be natural deaths. The incident comes as Kashmir continues to see a rise in tourism activity after several years of fluctuating security conditions in the region.
