Ugadi, also known as Yugadi, marks the beginning of the new year for people in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka. It’s on this day that a fresh 60-year cycle, called Samvatsara, kicks off. Each of the 60 Samvatsara within this cycle has its own distinct name.
In Maharashtra, Ugadi is observed as Gudi Padwa. People in both regions celebrate Ugadi and Gudi Padwa on the very same day.

Gudi Padwa: A Celebration of Harvest, History, and Hope
Ugadi marks the New Year as per the Luni-Solar calendar. This type of calendar determines the division of the year into months and days by considering both the Moon’s and the Sun’s positions. In contrast, the Solar calendar, which only takes into account the Sun’s position, serves as the counterpart to the Luni-Solar calendar. Consequently, the Hindu New Year is celebrated twice a year, under different names and at separate times. The Hindu New Year that follows the Solar calendar is known as Puthandu in Tamil Nadu, Bihu in Assam, Vaisakhi in Punjab, Pana Sankranti in Orissa, and Naba Barsha in West Bengal.
