Many states of India are struggling with the scorching heatwave, due to which they have to take steps for the safety of students. These measures include closing schools, extending summer holidays, and revising school timings.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has attributed the early summer to the El Nino phenomenon.
States Taking Action on School Schedules Due to Heatwave
- Bihar: Patna district schools have restricted classes for Class 10 students between 10:30 am and 4 pm. Classes 11 and 12 will have classes from 11:30 am to 4 pm till May 8th.
- Chhattisgarh: Summer vacation for all schools has been announced from April 22nd to June 15th.
- Jharkhand: Schools up to Class 8 have been closed entirely. Classes 9 to 12 will function from 7 am to 11:30 am. Outdoor activities are also suspended.
- Maharashtra: Summer vacation for all schools has been preponed from May 1st to April 22nd and will continue till June 15th.
- Meghalaya: West Garo Hills district has suspended classes for nursery and pre-primary schools on April 29th and 30th. Timings for other schools have been adjusted from 6:30 am to 10:30 am until May 1st.
- Tripura: Schools across the state were closed from April 24th to May 1st.
- West Bengal: Summer vacation for government and government-aided schools (except Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts) has been advanced from May 6th to April 22nd. Private schools are advised to follow suit.
These changes aim to protect students from the adverse health effects of extreme heatwave during this period.
