The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced a policy change for the upcoming academic session 2024-25. Students who opted for Basic Math in Class 10 can now choose Standard Mathematics in Class 11.

Previously, students choosing Basic Math in Class 10 were restricted to Applied Mathematics in Class 11. Standard Mathematics was only for those who opted for Standard Math in Class 10.

This move comes after the CBSE implemented a two-level Mathematics system for Class 10 in 2019

  • Mathematics (Standard) – Designed for students aiming to pursue Mathematics in Classes 11 and 12.
  • Mathematics (Basic) – Tailored for students not intending to pursue Mathematics at higher levels.

New CBSE Policy

  • Students who opted for Basic Mathematics (241) in Class 10 (2023-24) can now choose Standard Mathematics (041) in Class 11 (2024-25).
  • This is a one-time relaxation due to the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP).
  • Schools are required to ensure students possess the necessary aptitude for Standard Mathematics.
  • Subject selections made during Class 10 cannot be changed later.

This policy change provides greater flexibility for students who might have chosen Basic Math in Class 10 but now wish to pursue Standard Math in Class 11. However, schools must ensure students can handle the demands of Standard Mathematics.
