The Maharashtra government has announced a three-day state mourning period following the tragic death of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. The senior leader passed away in a plane crash near Baramati on January 28, 2026. As a mark of respect, the state government has declared a Maharashtra School Holiday for all schools and colleges, keeping them closed until January 30, 2026.

All academic activities have been suspended, according to an official notification from the state government. Government, private, and government-aided schools are all subject to this order. Furthermore, all exams scheduled for the afternoon of January 28 have been rescheduled by Mumbai University. New dates for these tests will soon be announced by the university.

State Mourning Protocols

All government buildings in Maharashtra will fly the national flag at half-mast during this time. Additionally, all public celebrations and official entertainment events have been cancelled by the state. The loss is “irreparable” for the state’s progress, according to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

Today, 29 January, the late Deputy Chief Minister’s final ceremonies will be held with full state honours at the Vidya Pratishthan ground in Baramati.
