Nepal has entered a new chapter. On 12 September 2025, Sushila Karki took the oath as interim Prime Minister. She is the first woman Prime Minister in Nepal’s history.

Nepal is facing one of the biggest political crisis in its recent history. The crisis began with Gen Z-led protests that forced Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to resign. The unrest started as opposition to a social media ban but soon turned into a nationwide anti-corruption movement.

So far:

  • 29 people were killed during the protests and clashes
  • Parliament building set on fire in Kathmandu
  • Army deployed with shoot-to-kill orders
  • PM Oli resigned on 9 September 2025 and went missing from his residence

The power vacuum has created space for new leadership. Kulman Ghising, a respected technocrat, has now emerged as the strongest contender to lead an interim government.
