17 June 2024 – At 9 am in the morning 13174 Kanchanjungha Express collides with the goods train at Rangapani near Jalpaiguri station. In this horrific accident, 5 people lost their lives and 20 were seriously injured. The Kanchanjungha Express was on the route from Agartala to Sealash when this accident happened. ASP of Darjeeling Police Abishek Roy said to the media – “The incident occurred when a goods train rammed into Kanchanjungha Express”. The incident happened because the locomotive of a goods train hit the Kanchanjungha Express from behind and derailment the two rear compartments of the passenger train.

CM of Bengal Mamata Banerjee shows her shock and concern about the incident. In a post on the social media handle X she said- “Shocked to learn, just now, about a tragic train accident, in Phansidewa area of Darjeeling district. While details are awaited, Kanchenjunga Express has reportedly been hit by a goods train. DM, SP, doctors, ambulances and disaster teams have been rushed to the site for rescue, recovery, and medical assistance. Action on war footing initiated.”

Train accident at Darjeeling – Rescue Work

Pratham Pratim Roy – chairman of the North Bengal State Transport Corporation, said – To assist the passengers we have arranged the 10 buses from North Bengal Rashtriya Paribahan Nigam which will come here soon and rescue the stranded passengers. Also, additional bus services will be running from Siliguri to Kolkata starting this afternoon.

All the injured passengers are taken to the hospitals. Rescue operation was initiated by a disaster response team, and NDRF had 15 ambulances.

Union Rail Minister Ashwini Vaishnav posted on X – “Unfortunate accident in NFR zone. Rescue operations are going on at war footing. Railways, NDRF and SDRF are working in close coordination. The injured are being shifted to the hospital. Senior officials have reached the site.”
