The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) offers various forms of Aadhaar cards, including the recently introduced masked Aadhaar card. This card provides a privacy benefit by partially hiding the Aadhaar number.
What is a Masked Aadhaar Card?
A masked Aadhaar card resembles a regular Aadhaar card but with a difference: the first eight digits of the Aadhaar number are masked, and replaced with “XXXX-XXXX”. The remaining information, including your name, address, date of birth, and QR code, remains visible.
Benefits of Using a Masked Aadhaar Card
- Increased Privacy: When sharing your Aadhaar card for tasks like booking tickets or travel documents, you can choose the masked version to reveal only the last four digits of your Aadhaar number.
- Valid Proof of Identity: Masked Aadhaar cards boost your identity verification options for travel, bookings, and more.
- Convenience: You can download a masked Aadhaar card anytime online, saving you a trip to an Aadhaar enrolment center for a PVC card.
When Not to Use a Masked Aadhaar Card
While masked Aadhaar cards offer privacy benefits, it’s important to note that they are not accepted for all purposes. When applying for government schemes or services, the full Aadhaar number is typically required.
Downloading Your Card
Register your mobile number with UIDAI to download a masked Aadhaar card. Here’s how to do it:
- Visit the UIDAI website (https://uidai.gov.in/).
- Click on “My Aadhaar” and then “Download Aadhaar”.
- Enter your Aadhaar number, enrollment ID, or virtual ID.
- Tick the “I want a masked Aadhaar” option.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to receive and submit an OTP, confirm your details, and download your masked Aadhaar card.
Masked Aadhaar Card Password
A masked Aadhaar card is password-protected to ensure only you can access it. The password typically consists of the first four letters of your name followed by your birth year.
For example: if your name is Babita and your birth year is 1900, your password would be BABI1900.
Masked Aadhaar Cards: A Step Towards User Control
The masked Aadhaar card empowers users with more control over their Aadhaar information. By offering a privacy-focused option, UIDAI is helping to address concerns about Aadhaar data security.
