Wayanad, Kerala: At least 43 people, including a one-year-old child, lost their lives in a devastating series of landslides in Kerala’s Wayanad district early Tuesday morning. Hundreds of people are trapped under debris as rescue teams battle heavy rain to reach affected areas.
The initial landslide hit near Meppadi around 2 AM, followed by another at 4:10 AM. The hilly terrain and ongoing rainfall have hampered rescue efforts. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has mobilized all government agencies, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA).
Hospitals across the district are on high alert, with medical teams ready to treat the injured. The Kerala Health Minister has activated a control room for emergency assistance.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed condolences and announced ex-gratia for the Kerala landslides families of the victims. Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi has also offered support and assured assistance.
