An Indian couple visiting Canada and their three-month-old grandchild were tragically killed in a multi-vehicle collision in Ontario on Monday.

  • The accident occurred after police pursued a suspect from a liquor store robbery who was driving the wrong way on Highway 401.
  • Four people were confirmed dead at the scene, including the Indian couple (identities not released), their grandchild, and the robbery suspect.
  • The couple’s 33-year-old son and 27-year-old daughter-in-law, who were also in the vehicle, sustained injuries. The mother’s injuries were reported as serious.
  • Investigation: Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing the incident. Seven investigators, a forensic investigator, and a collision reconstructionist are assigned to the case.

The chase reportedly began after a liquor store robbery in Bowmanville. The suspect, driving a cargo van, fled police and traveled against oncoming traffic for roughly 20 minutes before the deadly collision involving at least six vehicles. A 38-year-old male passenger from the van was seriously injured.

The SIU investigates incidents involving police-related deaths, serious injuries, or allegations of sexual assault. Autopsies for the victims were conducted on Wednesday in Toronto.
