The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is implementing a major change to phone calls in India. Soon, you’ll see the caller name display alongside their number on your phone screen!
Traditionally, only phone numbers appeared when receiving calls. Now, with TRAI’s new directive, mobile operators (Jio, Airtel, Vodafone) will enable a feature called Calling Name Presentation (CNAP). This means you’ll see the caller name display along with the number, helping you identify them before picking them up.
Benefits of Caller Name Display
- Reduced Scams: By identifying callers beforehand, you’ll be less likely to fall victim to phone scams, a growing concern in India.
- Increased Transparency: CNAP promotes transparency in phone communication, allowing you to decide whether to answer calls from unknown numbers.
How it Works
- TRAI requires telcos to obtain user consent before activating CNAP.
- Once you grant permission, your name will be displayed to others when you make calls.
- Similarly, you’ll see the caller’s name on your screen if they’ve enabled CNAP.
While an exact date hasn’t been announced, TRAI has directed telecom operators to work on implementing CNAP. This is a significant step towards enhancing user safety and convenience in mobile communication across India.
