World Organ Donation Day 2024: Save Lives, Become a Donor in India

World Organ Donation Day
Spread the love

Over 300,000 people in India wait for a life-saving organ transplant. Tragically, around 20 die every single day while on the waiting list. Organ donation can bridge this gap, offering a second chance at life to those desperately in need.

History of World Organ Donation Day

  • 1954: The first successful living donor organ transplant (kidney) took place in the USA.
  • World Organ Donation Day: Celebrated annually to raise awareness about organ donation.
  • India:
    • People observed National Organ Donation Day on November 27th.
    • Changed to August 3rd in 2023 to commemorate India’s first successful deceased-donor heart transplant.
  • July as Organ Donation Month: Designated to commemorate the implementation of the Transplantation of Human Organ Act in India.

Living and Deceased Donation

Both living and deceased individuals can be organ donors. Living donors can donate a kidney, part of their liver, or even a lung. Deceased donors, after confirmation of brain death using established medical criteria, can donate organs like eyes, heart, liver, kidneys, and lungs. Additionally, tissues like corneas, skin, and bones can significantly improve the recipient’s quality of life.

Dispelling Common Myths

Many misconceptions surround organ donation, deterring potential donors and their families. Here are some common myths debunked:

  • Myth:  Donation affects health and lifespan.
  • Fact:  Donors undergo thorough medical evaluations to ensure their well-being.  After donation, they can lead active lives, have children, and participate in sports.
  • Myth:  Donation disfigures the deceased donor’s body.
  • Fact:  Organs are removed surgically with meticulous closure, leaving no visible difference in appearance.

World Organ Donation Day, celebrated on August 13th, serves as a crucial reminder of the immense impact each of us can make. By becoming an organ donor, you offer the gift of life to someone in dire need. Discuss your wishes with your family and register as a donor. Let’s bridge the gap and save lives!
