The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has courted controversy by removing the Preamble of the Indian Constitution from several textbooks of classes 3 and 6. This significant change has raised concerns among teachers and parents alike.

  • Class 3: The Preamble is absent from Hindi, English, mathematics, and the newly introduced ‘World Around Us’ textbooks.
  • Class 6: The Preamble is missing from the new English textbook ‘Poorvi’ and the Sanskrit textbook ‘Deepakam’. The Hindi book ‘Malhar’ and the science book ‘Curiosity’ include the Preamble.

NCERT’s Justification:

The NCERT has defended its decision (Removes Preamble from Textbooks), stating that the Preamble is just one of several constitutional elements crucial for children’s understanding. They focused on the equal importance of fundamental duties, fundamental rights, and the national anthem in fostering constitutional values. The council also highlights the alignment of this approach with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

People’s Opinion:

While the NCERT insists on the comprehensive nature of its approach, critics argue that the Preamble serves as a foundational document, encapsulating the core principles of the Indian Constitution. NCERT Removes the Preamble from Textbooks at an early stage it might hinder students’ understanding of the nation’s democratic framework.

This development has sparked a wider debate on the appropriate methods of inculcating constitutional values in young minds. As the discussion progresses, it remains to be seen how the NCERT will address the concerns raised by various stakeholders.
