The UGC-NET exam conducted on June 18, 2024, by the National Testing Agency (NTA) was scrapped due to a paper leak. Reportedly, the question paper was available for purchase on the dark web. Encrypted social media platforms for a hefty sum of ₹6 lahks, just 48 hours before the exam.
To ensure fairness and transparency, the Ministry of Education canceled the exam on June 19th, impacting nearly 9 lakh students.
Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Steps In
The CBI has registered a case against unidentified individuals for criminal conspiracy and cheating. The agency is collaborating with the NTA to investigate the leak’s source. The role of coaching centers, which many exam aspirants rely on for competitive exams like UGC-NET, NEET, and civil services, is also under scrutiny.
Government Announces Committee for NTA Reforms
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan announced the formation of a high-level committee to review the functioning of the National Testing Agency. This committee will recommend reforms to improve the NTA’s structure, functioning, exam process, transparency, and data security protocols. The government’s commitment is clear: “Zero-error testing” for future exams.
