US Army Chief forced out, the sudden removal of General Randy George by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has raised alarm across the Pentagon and beyond.

In a dramatic and highly unusual move, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has asked Army Chief General Randy George to “retire immediately,” cutting short his term that was expected to run until 2027.

The Pentagon confirmed the decision, stating that George “will be retiring… effective immediately” and added, “we wish him well in his retirement.” Reuters

The sudden removal comes at a critical time, as the United States continues active military operations in the Middle East, particularly involving Iran.

US Army Chief Forced Out During Active Conflict

Firing a sitting Army Chief during wartime is “nearly without precedent,” according to defense officials cited by Reuters.

No official reason has been given for his removal. However, the timing amid escalating U.S.-Iran tensions have raised serious concerns within defense circles about stability and continuity in military leadership.

The Pentagon also confirmed that General Christopher LaNeve will step in as acting Army Chief, signaling that the decision was planned rather than abrupt internally.

Part of a Larger Pentagon Overhaul

George’s exit is not an isolated case. Since taking office in 2025, Hegseth has removed “over a dozen” top military officials, including senior Army, Navy, and Air Force leaders. NDTV

Analysts suggest the reshuffle may reflect an effort to install leadership aligned with the administration’s military vision. One report noted the desire for leaders who better match “Trump’s vision for the Army.”

Rising Tensions Inside the Pentagon

The move has intensified concerns about growing friction between civilian leadership and military officials. Critics argue that abrupt leadership changes during active operations could impact decision making and troop morale.

With U.S. forces deployed across the Middle East and no clear strategy for de-escalation, this leadership shake up suggests more than just a personnel change, it symbolizes a fundamental transition unfolding inside the Pentagon.
