There have been several notable Prime Ministers who have shaped the country's history.

Jawaharlal Nehru (1947-1964)

The first Prime Minister of India.

Played a crucial role in shaping country's early years. known for his progressive policies & commitment to democracy

Gulzarilal Nanda (1964,1966)

He actually served as Interim Prime Minister of India twice, not just once. Both times, his terms lasted for 13 days. Following deaths of PM Nehru (1964) & Shastri (1966).

Lal Bahadur Shastri (1964-1966)

Shastri was a close associate of Nehru and took over as Prime Minister after his death.  He was known for his integrity and his ability to handle crises effectively.

Indira Gandhi (1966-1977, 1980-1984)

Indira Gandhi was the first and only female Prime Minister of India.  She was known for her strong leadership and her ability to take bold decisions.

Morarji Desai (1977-1979)

A Prominent leader of Indian National Congress and became Prime Minister after Indira Gandhi's defeat in the 1977 elections.  known for his integrity & commitment to democracy

Charan Singh (1979)

A Prominent leader of opposition. Became Prime Minister after Morarji Desai's resignation.  known for commitment to welfare of farmers & ability to bring political parties together

Indira Gandhi (1980-1984)

Indira Gandhi returned to power in 1980. remained PM until her assassination in 1984.  Her tenure marked controversy & crisis, including Operation Blue Star & Bofors scandal.

Rajiv Gandhi (1984-1989)

Rajiv Gandhi was known for his modernization policies and his ability to connect with the youth, but his tenure was also marked by controversy and crisis.

V.P. Singh (1989-1990)

Vishwanath Pratap Singh became Prime Minister after Rajiv Gandhi's defeat in the 1989 elections.  He was known for his commitment to social justice.

Chandra Shekhar (1990-1991)

Chandra Shekhar became Prime Minister after V.P. Singh's resignation. Known for his commitment to social justice & ability to bring together different political parties.

P.V. Narasimha Rao (1991-1996)

Leader of Indian National Congress, became Prime Minister after Chandra Shekhar's resignation.  Known for economic reforms & ability to handle country's economic crisis.

H.D. Deve Gowda (1996-1997)

Deve Gowda became Prime Minister after Rao's resignation. He was known for his commitment to social justice and his ability to bring together different political parties.

I.K. Gujral (1997-1998)

Gujral became Prime Minister after Deve Gowda's resignation. He was known for his commitment to social justice and his ability to bring together different political parties.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee (1998-2004)

Vajpayee was known for his commitment to social justice & his ability to handle country's economic crisis, but his tenure was also marked by controversy and crisis

Manmohan Singh (2004-2014)

Manmohan Singh was known for his economic reforms and his ability to handle the country's economic crisis, but his tenure was also marked by controversy and crisis.

Narendra Modi  (2014-Present)

Modi was a prominent leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and became Prime Minister after the 2014 elections.
