Ganga Water: Purity Claims vs CPCB Report
The UP govt claims Ganga water is as pure as alkaline water, but a CPCB report indicates high levels of fecal coliform bacteria, raising concerns.
Prof. Umesh Kumar Singh says CPCB’s report is incomplete. He asserts that, based on available data, the water at Triveni Sangam is safe for bathing.
These bacteria are found in human and animal feces. If present in water, they can cause diarrhea, stomach cramps, and gastrointestinal infections.
BOD indicates organic pollution in water. CPCB’s report shows fluctuating BOD levels, which impact aquatic life and may pose health risks.
Scientist Dr. Ajay Sonkar tested water from 5 ghats and found no bacterial growth. He debunked pollution claims, calling them misleading.
Dr. Sonkar argues that if Ganga were highly polluted, hospitals would be overwhelmed with patients. But no such health crisis has occurred.
PM Narendra Modi bathed at Sangam on Feb 5. Home Minister Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, CM Yogi Adityanath, and UP ministers also participated.
Bollywood stars like Anupam Kher, Hema Malini, Remo D’Souza, and Mamta Kulkarni attended. Spiritual leaders and saints also graced the event.
While the govt claims Ganga’s purity, CPCB’s report raises concerns. Devotees continue to take holy dips, believing in the river’s divine power.
