India is on track to significantly expand its nuclear power capacity, aiming to triple it from the current 8,180 megawatts (MW) to 22,480 MW by 2031-32. This ambitious plan was announced by Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, during the recent session in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.

Important Statistics Details

  • Current Capacity: 8,180 MW
  • Target Capacity by 2031-32: 22,480 MW
  • Increase in Capacity: 14,300 MW
  • Surge in Last Decade: Over 70% increase from 4,780 MW in 2013-14
  • Electricity Generation Growth: From 34,228 million units in 2013-14 to 47,971 million units in 2023-24

India plans to add 21 new nuclear power reactors with a combined capacity of 15,300 MW. These reactors are at various stages of development, with nine reactors under construction and twelve in pre-project activities. Notable projects include:

Dr Singh highlighted that the expansion of nuclear power is important for India’s energy transition towards the net-zero target by 2070. Studies show that India will need about 100,000 MW of nuclear capacity by 2047 to meet its energy demands sustainably.
