Dhaka, August 2, 2024: Bangladesh has once again restricted access to popular social media platforms, including Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, and TikTok.
The decision comes amid the ongoing student protests across the country that have shaken the nation.
The fresh ban, implemented on Friday, targets mobile network access to these platforms. While authorities had previously imposed a broader internet shutdown to quell the unrest, this latest move appears more targeted.
Social Media Blackout
The ban extends to communication social media apps like Facebook Messenger and Telegram, significantly impacting online communication within Bangladesh. This is the second time the government has restricted Meta platforms, with a previous ban imposed from July 17 to July 31.
The repeated internet restrictions have caused significant disruptions. Internet speeds dropped considerably due to a surge in VPN usage. However, they returned to normal levels by Thursday night.

Bangladesh’s decision follows a similar move by Turkey, which also banned Instagram on Friday. It highlights a growing trend of countries restricting online platforms to control information flow and manage public dissent.
It is unclear when the latest social media ban will be lifted in Bangladesh. The situation remains volatile, with the government citing concerns about misinformation and potential incitement to violence as reasons for the restrictions.
