The ongoing debate surrounding the participation of senior players in domestic cricket continues during the IND vs SA 2025 ODI series. Former India selector MSK Prasad recently shared his thoughts on the matter. He specifically addressed the ongoing scrutiny surrounding Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.

Prasad drew a direct comparison with the legendary captain MS Dhoni. “We never had a word with Dhoni about playing domestic cricket.” He explained to the selection committee that he never forced Dhoni to play domestic matches. Instead, Dhoni played when he felt it was necessary. Prasad advises the current management to adopt a similar approach. He believes that officials should not create confusion. There should be clear communication or a strict “perform-or-perish” policy.

Handling Senior Players

According to Prasad, the management should consider the senior cricketers’ perspectives. He added that experienced players like Kohli and Rohit are still performing well. Therefore, forcing them into the domestic circuit could be detrimental.

Guidance for the future

The former selector also suggested a mentorship role for the senior duo. He recalled how Dhoni guided Kohli during the transition phase. Similarly, Kohli and Rohit can support Shubman Gill.

Prasad’s Suggestions Include

  • Avoid “messing with the minds” of big players.
  • Allow seniors to decide their domestic schedule.
  • Encourage Kohli and Rohit to act as a “guiding light” for Gill.

Prasad believes this strategy will help the team more than forcing them into tournaments like the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He emphasizes that seniors should have a say in their schedule.
