ISRO Chief Dr. S. Somanath Earns PhD from IIT Madras
Dr. S. Somanath, the Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), recently achieved a significant milestone in his illustrious career by earning a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras. This accomplishment is particularly special for Dr. Somanath, who comes from a simple rural background and faced many challenges to reach the pinnacle of his profession.
Despite being a state topper in science, Dr. Somanath lacked the confidence to attempt the IIT entrance exam as a young student. However, Dr. Somanath never abandoned his dream of graduating from an esteemed institution like IIT Madras. After completing his graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering from Thangal Kunju Musaliar College of Engineering in Kollam. And a Master’s degree from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru, Dr. Somanath joined ISRO in 1985 and steadily rose through the ranks to become its Chairman.
Dr. Somanath’s PhD journey has been a long and arduous one, spanning over 35 years. His research topic, vibration isolators, was a subject close to his heart. Have worked on it as an engineer in an ISRO project decades ago. Despite his busy schedule, which included spearheading the successful Chandrayaan-3 mission. Other major ISRO projects, Dr. Somanath remained dedicated to completing his PhD, attending seminars, publishing papers, and defending his thesis.
The ISRO chief’s achievements are not limited to his PhD. Nearly a dozen universities have already bestowed honorary doctorates upon him in recognition of his contributions to the space sector. Including his role as the lead developer of India’s heavy launcher, Launch Vehicle Mark-III. And his role in the Chandrayaan-3 mission. His leadership is included. Successful lunar landing.
