NASA just announced a bunch of eclipses coming in the next few years. These are events where the Sun, Moon, and Earth line up in special ways, creating amazing sights in the sky. There will be both solar eclipses (when the Moon covers the Sun partly or completely) and lunar eclipses (when Earth’s shadow falls on the Moon).
Annular Solar Eclipse Kicks off the Show (October 2, 2024)
The first eclipse is on October 2nd, 2024! During this event, the Moon will block a significant portion of the Sun, creating a mesmerizing “ring of fire” effect visible in South America, but some parts of North America, South America, and Antarctica will still see a bit of the Sun covered by the Moon.
Partial Solar Eclipses Paint the Skies (2025)
The year 2025 promises two partial solar eclipses. The first, on March 29th, will be observable across vast stretches of Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas. The second, on September 21st, will be visible from Australia, Antarctica, and across the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.
A Ring of Fire and a Total Blackout (2026)
Antarctica gets a special light show on February 17th, 2026! The Sun will look like a ring of fire for a while. People in Africa, South America, and near some oceans will see part of the Sun covered by the Moon too. Later that year, on August 12th, there’s another eclipse where the Moon completely covers the Sun for a short time in Greenland, Iceland, Europe, and Asia. People in other places will see part of the Sun disappear too.
