‘India committed to BRICS’ – Prime Minister Modi Commences Multi-Nation Tour

Prime Minister Narendra Modi began a five-nation tour on Wednesday, July 2, visiting Ghana, Trinidad & Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia. This significant trip aims to strengthen India ties with the Global South. It also seeks to build stronger partnerships across the Atlantic.

Objectives of the India Global South Tour

Prime Minister Modi stated the visits will reinforce bonds of friendship across the Global South. They will also strengthen partnerships on both sides of the Atlantic. Deeper engagement in multilateral platforms like BRICS, the African Union, ECOWAS, and CARICOM is another goal.

  • Ghana (July 2-3): PM Modi met President John Dramani Mahama. The focus was on cooperation in investment, energy, health, security, and development. PM Modi also addressed the Parliament of Ghana. This shows the strong democratic ties between the two nations.
  • Trinidad & Tobago (July 3-4): The Prime Minister traveled to this Caribbean nation. India shares deep historical and cultural connections with Trinidad & Tobago. This year marks 180 years since the first Indians arrived there. PM Modi met President Christine Carla Kangaloo and Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar.
  • Argentina: This is the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Argentina in 57 years. Argentina is a key economic partner in Latin America. Collaboration will deepen in agriculture, energy, trade, technology, and critical minerals. PM Modi is scheduled to meet President Javier Milei.
  • Brazil (July 6-7): PM Modi will attend the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro. He will also have a bilateral state visit to Brasília. This is the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister in nearly six decades. Discussions with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will cover shared Global South priorities.
  • Namibia: The tour concludes in Namibia. PM Modi will meet President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah. Both nations share a history of struggle against colonialism. PM Modi will address the Joint Session of the Namibian Parliament. This highlights the enduring solidarity between the two countries.
