The Maha Kumbh 2025 Mela in Prayagraj, a massive religious gathering, has raised concerns about river water quality. A Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) report, submitted to the National Green Tribunal (NGT), reveals high levels of fecal coliform in the water where devotees took holy dips.
- River water at all monitored locations showed elevated fecal coliform levels.
- Mass bathing during the Maha Kumbh contributed to increased fecal concentration.
- The CPCB submitted its report to the NGT on February 3, 2025.
The National Green Tribunal (NGT), in its order dated February 17, 2025, quoted the CPCB report. The report clearly stated that the water quality was not suitable for bathing due to the high fecal coliform count. This contamination stems from human and animal excreta. The sheer number of people bathing, especially on auspicious days, exacerbated the problem.
Furthermore, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) expressed dissatisfaction with the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB). The court noted that the UPPCB had not submitted a comprehensive action taken report as previously directed. While the UPPCB provided some water test reports, the NGT felt it did not fulfill the requirement for a complete report.
