Kota, Rajasthan has once again been hit by tragedy with the recent news of two NEET students committed suicide. The deaths are the sixth of their kind this month. The deaths have put pressure on a comprehensive response to a mental health crisis among students in the city. Kota, a city known for coaching institutes for competitive exams, has tremendous pressure on students to emerge successful.

  • Kota, renowned as a hub for competitive exam coaching, witnesses immense pressure on students to excel. This intense academic environment, coupled with the weight of parental expectations, can lead to overwhelming stress, anxiety, and ultimately, tragic consequences.
  • Last year, 17 students committed suicide in Kota as reported, a significant decrease from the 23 cases in 2023. However, even a single loss of life is unacceptable. These numbers underscore the critical need for preventive measures and support systems.
  • While academic pressure plays a crucial role, factors like social isolation, peer pressure, and family dynamics also contribute to the mental health struggles of students.
  • Addressing this crisis requires a multi-pronged approach. This includes:
    • Increased access to trained counselors, psychologists, and mental health professionals is crucial.
    • Schools and coaching institutes must prioritize early identification and intervention for students exhibiting signs of distress.
    • Workshops and awareness campaigns for parents are essential to educate them about the importance of mental health and the dangers of excessive pressure.
    • The focus should shift from solely academic performance to a holistic approach that emphasizes well-being, social skills, and emotional intelligence.
