Bridge Collapse in Uttarakhand Leaves Pilgrims Stranded, Two Washed Away

SDRF Rescue

Uttarakhand’s monsoon season brought heavy rainfall and increased river currents, leading to several rescue operations by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).

  • Bridge Collapse Strands Pilgrims: A temporary bridge on the Gomukh footpath, around 8-9 kilometers ahead of Gangotri, collapsed due to a sudden rise in river water flow on Friday. This left 30-40 pilgrims stranded. Tragically, two pilgrims were swept away. SDRF swiftly deployed a team to the location and successfully rescued 16 pilgrims. Rescue efforts for the remaining stranded pilgrims are ongoing.
  • SDRF Rescue Youths from Robber’s Cave: Earlier on Thursday, the SDRF team displayed their bravery by rescuing 10 youngsters who got stuck on an island near Robber’s Cave (Guchhupani) in Dehradun. Upon receiving information from the City Control Room, a team with Sub-Inspector Laxmi Rawat from the Sahastradhara post rushed to the site with the necessary equipment. The team navigated the strong river currents and used ropes to safely bring all 10 individuals back to shore.
  • Heavy Rains Cause Flooding in Haridwar: Last week, Haridwar witnessed severe flooding due to heavy rainfall. The rising water levels of the Ganges River submerged roads and caused several vehicles to float. Local authorities urged residents and tourists to avoid bathing in the river due to the dangerous conditions.

These incidents highlight the importance of being vigilant during the monsoon season in Uttarakhand. Following meteorological updates and official advisories can help ensure a safe pilgrimage or trip.
