Getting a driver’s license in India is about to get easier. The government is implementing new driving license rules in India, starting June 1st, 2024.

No More RTO Driving Tests

Earlier, to obtain a driver’s license it was necessary to pass a practical driving test at the Regional Transport Office (RTO). Under the new rules, individuals can now take their driving test at authorized private driving training centers. This eliminates the need to navigate the often crowded RTO system.

Private Training Centers Step In

Private driving schools will now play a central role in issuing driver’s licenses. To qualify, these centers must meet specific requirements, including:

  • Minimum Land Area: At least 1 acre of land is required for light vehicle training, with an additional 2 acres needed for heavy motor vehicles.
  • Trainer Qualifications: Trainers must possess a high school diploma, have at least 5 years of driving experience, and understand biometrics and information technology systems.

The new driving license rules in India standardized training. Learner drivers will undergo a structured program with clear timeframes:

  • Light Motor Vehicles (LMV): Minimum 29 hours of training over 4 weeks, divided into 8 hours of theory and 21 hours of practical training.
  • Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMV): Minimum 38 hours of training over 6 weeks, including 8 hours of theory and 31 hours of practical training.

Fees According to New Driving License Rules in India

Besides all these details, the government has also decided the fees for all these services and it is mentioned below.

  1. The learner license fee is Rs 200.
  2. The learner license Renewal will be done for Rs 200.
  3. The international license fee is Rs 1000.
  4. The permanent license fee is Rs 200.

Application Process

The application process remains largely online through the Parivahan portal (https://parivahan.gov.in). Here’s a quick guide:

  1. Visit the Parivahan portal and select “Driving License Apply.”
  2. Download and fill out the application form.
  3. Upload the required documents and submit the online application.
  4. Visit the RTO for document verification and a final driving skills assessment.
