The Symbol’s Duality

For Hindus, the swastika’s arms ज्या (jya) bend clockwise, representing  “Bhadra” –  the well-being and prosperity of humanity.  However, the Nazi swastika has its arms bent counter-clockwise, linked to a period of immense darkness and destruction in world history.

  • Rangoli is an art form where beautiful patterns are created using colored powders on floors. Swastikas are often included in these intricate designs, but other symbols like lotuses or paisleys can also be used to represent prosperity.
  • Jewelry depicting swastikas remains a popular way for Hindus to display their faith. Alternatively, pendants featuring Om or other Hindu symbols can be worn for religious purposes.
  • Many statues depicting Hindu gods and goddesses incorporate the swastika as part of the design. These murtis can be placed in homes or temples for prayer and reverence.
