As of July 5, 2024, eight Zika virus infections were confirmed in Maharashtra. Including six cases in Pune, one in Kolhapur, and one in Sangamner. In response, Director General of Health Services (DGHS) Dr Atul Goyal issued a Zika Virus advisory to all states.

Zika Virus Advisory For Pregnant Women and Microcephaly – A Cause for Concern

The Zika virus, transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes like dengue and chikungunya, can cause serious birth defects in babies born to infected mothers. Microcephaly, a condition where a baby’s head is smaller than expected, is a major concern.

  • Healthcare facilities in affected areas will screen pregnant women for Zika. Closely monitor the development of fetuses in infected mothers.
  • States have been directed to intensify efforts to control Aedes mosquito breeding grounds in homes, workplaces, schools, and other locations.
  • Public Awareness: The government is encouraging states to use social media and other platforms to raise awareness about Zika. It’s important to note that most Zika cases are mild or asymptomatic, and the goal is to prevent panic.

Zika in India

Since its initial detection in Gujarat in 2016, Zika virus cases have emerged in various Indian states. The recent surge in Maharashtra highlights the need for continued vigilance and preventative measures.
